Sherrie Klein

Introduced in Legion of Lawndale Heroes 13.3, 'Learning To Fly', Sherrie Klein is a Cadet Second Class at the United States Academy of Extranormal Studies.

Biography

Sherrie was assigned to Training Cadre 3000, although she was originally slated to be assigned to Training Cadre 2996. Sherrie was replaced in that cadre by Professor Richard Hiram Blumenberg in favor of Julia Carlyle, who in his eyes made a better fit in the cadre for its original purpose - creating a group of cadets who would know David Allen Farrington intimately, and therefore be able to contain or eliminate him if his incredibly potent psionic powers ever made him a danger. (Because of the way that the cadets seemed to bond almost immediately, the Professor decided to forgo his initial plan and immediately chose the cadre for the long-term project that he had concieved of due to his long association with Russell Stark and his 'National Legion' idea - 'Project Alliance'.)

Noting that her powers were too extraordinary not to be included in the project, the Professor assigned Sherrie as Julia's roommate; he also decided that this would benefit Julia as well in that she would have a close friend and confidant outside of her cadre, and that Sherrie would still have very close contacts and associations with the others. This has led to an interesting friendship between the two girls; Sherrie (from an agricultural family with continual financial problems due to the way 'family farms' are being squeezed by large agricultural collectives run by corporations;in her family's case, alleviated somewhat by the profits brought in by the use of her powers and her USAES cadet attendance stipend) and Julia (from an extraordinarily wealthy family - the Carlyles would be considered in the top 1% of the U.S. wealthiest families) have managed to become incredibly close without any social clashes.

The fact that Sherrie is the single most intelligent cadet currently at the Academy, but does not act like it, also helps, as does the fact that both girls have always been there for the other in times of trouble or just stress and embarassment. She has always supported Julia in her goals and trials, but never hesitates to let her know when she's doing something that would be considered silly, idiotic or just plain wrong; she has also been there to comfort Julia during times of need to cofort her or act as a sounding board. (She was the first one to talk seriously with Julia about her feelings for David Allen, and backed her without reservation against all comers when Julia decided - upon entering the Elite Academy - to follow her own path and take the Federal Service track instead of the Armed Forces track like the other Alliance cadets, to go for her major in Administration of Justice, and to pursue her dream of becoming a Special Agent with the FBI.)

Julia has also been an influence on Sherrie; she has nudged her roommate to be more forward with guys she's interested in (which led to interesting consequences with Trent Lane during LLH 12:6,in which she missed the VR simulation between The Alliance and the Legion). Sherrie is also unaware that Julia's family has used their influence to benefit the Klein family; during their term as Cadets Second Year, a great number of families in the area were about to be thrown in financial hardship - if not lose their homes and farms outright - due to the collapse of a local bank (as a result of rampant corruption and incompetence on the part of the family who ran the bank, and who ran off with millions of dollars). The Carlyles, acting through friends with interests in the area, had the bank purchased and pumped fresh capital into the area; they also (using contacts in The Elite that they have fostered for information purposes only) had the thieving family tracked down, brought back to the U.S. and turned over to Federal authorities. Their actions saved many families in the area, including the Kleins.

Despite her family's financial troubles, Sherrie has never been jealous of Julia (or David Allen, for that matter). She has dreams of financial security, and knows that with her powers (once she finishes her National Service obligation), and the residual profits from the invenions she has created or worked on (as a result of the USAES Financial Aid program), she will be a billionaire within a few years. She has already developed a widespread reputation (even outside the Academy) for her abilities, her intelligence and her existant work; she has already recieved hundreds of job offers from the public sector, almost every major U.S government agency, all of the U.S. Armed Forces (as an independant civilian contractor), and many foreign governments. She has even recieved standing offers of development funding and research grants (in the tens of millions upwards) from many, many sources who see the nearly-unlimited potential for technological and financial gain as a result of Sherrie's abilities.

It appears that Sherrie and Trent Lane have been dating on at least a casual basis; this was confirmed in the LLH Mini 'A Day at the Races', when Trent escorted Sherrie to the annual running of the Kentucky Derby.

Trivia

• Sherrie has an approved sales franchise through the USAES 'financial aid program', in which she gives the Academy fifteen percent of her income through sales. (She is also allowed to maintain sole patent rights to her works, in exchange for 'residual payments' that equal five percent of the yearly sales totals of all items and technologies under the agreement for a twenty-five year period.) Sherrie also trades items and artifacts she has created or modified with her powers with a number of other cadets in exchange for services and other compensations, such as free transport to other countries, or assistance for her family farm (from cadets with appropriate powers).

• Sherrie is easily one of the wealthiest cadets currently enrolled at the Academy whose wealth was created by her own efforts and abilities, as opposed to being born into wealth. Because of the existing agreements and deals she already has in play and the 'civilian contractor' clause that she has in all of her deals (allowing her to retain rights and be paid premium prices for her creations), it is estimated that Sherrie is already a multi-millionaire (those funds will be released to her upon her graduation from USAES}. Likewise, by the time her service obligation ends, Sherrie will almost certainly be a billionaire.
