Spirit of the Game, Nature of the Beast
The story is structured as a frame narrative, as a story Tom Sloane is telling Daria Morgendorffer about his past before he had met her, when she notices his relationship with his sister Elsie. He tells her that Elsie's favorite pasttime was causing chaos and strife to humiliate others and advance her own social prestige while ruining others, in a grand game played by many of Lawndale's social elite. One player, Nadine Whittaker, attempts to find something scandalous about the Sloanes, and sends her cousin Bianca to get close to Tom. While she does so, she begins to develop feelings for him.
Elsie's own agent, Reed Edison, discovers this plan by blackmailing Nadine's homosexual boyfriend, which causes Elsie to plan to frame Bianca as a thief at another girl's birthday party. However, Bianca discovers the plan in time to frame Nadine instead, humiliating her. Bianca tells Tom of the truth of the affair, which leads he and Bianca to catch Elsie in a drug-purchasing sting.
